The Ungava Tulattavik Health Center wishes to inform Nunavimmiut of the current situation regarding the Tusaajiapik elder’s home.
Our seniors deserve to live in an environment that is safe, respectful and adapted to their needs. It is in this spirit that our teams are currently working to analyze some of the technical issues observed in the building over the past few weeks.
These issues concern in particular certain installations of the heating system and other major technical components of the building. As a precautionary measure, temporary actions have been put in place to maintain a safe environment for residents and employees, including increased surveillance of the facilities.
A careful analysis for each resident
Thirteen elders currently live at the Tusaajiapik resource. Among them, several require a significant level of care.
Each resident is currently undergoing a comprehensive and individualized clinical assessment. This approach aims to determine the safest solution that is best suited to their health conditions and living environment.
Our priority is clear: to ensure that every person receives the right care, at the right time, in an environment that is safe and respectful of their dignity.

Establishment of a transition committee
To support this process, a Transition Committee for the Accommodation and Security of Tusaajiapik Users has been set up. This committee is composed of the Nunavik Regional Board of Health and Social Services and the Ungava Tulattavik Health Center.
Its mandate includes:
Where possible, solutions in the Nunavik region will be preferred. If certain clinical situations require it, partner resources located in southern Quebec could be considered to ensure continuity of care.
Families at the heart of our concerns
Families are informed and supported at every stage. Our clinical teams, including health professionals and social workers, meet with loved ones to explain the situation and answer their questions.
In such a sensitive situation, it is essential for us to take the time to listen, explain and accompany residents and families with respect and compassion.
"The safety, dignity and well-being of our seniors are at the heart of every decision we make. We know that this situation can cause concern for families and for community members. This is why our teams work with great care and respect to assess each situation individually and to ensure that each resident receives the appropriate care in a safe environment. We are committed to supporting families every step of the way and communicating transparently throughout this process."
- Larry Watt,
Executive Director of the Ungava Tulattavik Health Center
Maintaining the link with families
In the event that a resident needs to be transferred to southern Quebec, special measures will be put in place to preserve family, linguistic and cultural ties
These measures include:
If a resident is required to be accompanied while travelling, the terms and conditions of the Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) program will apply.
Employees informed and supported
Employees of the Tusaajiapik resource were also met to inform them of the situation and to address their concerns.
UTHC would like to reassure its staff. Everything is being done to maintain jobs and support employees during this period. Several assignment possibilities exist in different sectors of the institution to allow staff to continue to put their expertise at the service of the community and for the benefit of users.
The safety, dignity and well-being of seniors remain at the heart of all decisions made.
