A New Medical Plane to Better Ensure the Health and Safety of Ungava Communities

The Ungava Tulattavik Health Center (UTHC) is pleased to offer the population of the Ungava Bay a fully equipped medical plane dedicated to evacuations for its users and patients.

Kuujjuaq, February 26, 2025 –The Ungava Tulattavik Health Center (UTHC) is pleased to offer the population of the Ungava Bay a fully equipped medical plane dedicated to evacuations for its users and patients. This new aircraft and its dedicated staff will further support individuals and their families at critical moments in their lives.


Tulattavik Health Center thus becomes the first health center in Nunavik to offer a DASH-8-100 dedicated to medical evacuations. This is made possible with Makivvik Corporation’s subsidiary company, Air Inuit Ltd.

The health and safety of users is at the heart of UTHC’s concerns.

With this initiative, UTHC is fully fulfilling its mission to provide quality services to the population it serves, at all times.


The new plane will be able to be carried out 24 hours a day and 7 days a week with a medical team dedicated specifically to MEDEVAC.

Medical Evacuations (MEDEVAC) on the Ungava Coast

917 medical evacuations by air in 1 year (between April 1 and March 31, 2024).

50,000 km² of territory served north of the 55th parallel.

More than 7,000 residents on the Ungava Coast living in 7 villages.

Enhanced Safety for Staff and Patients

  • Stretcher specifically designed for air transport.
  • Secure anchoring for medical equipment: monitor, IV pump, ventilator.
  • Optimized safety for the incubator during transport.


Lifeport System for Stretchers

  • Easier patient transfers via cargo door.
  • No need to dismantle the incubator for boarding.


Dedicated Medical Equipment

  • Equipment exclusively assigned to the aircraft and always ready for use.
  • Sufficient space to provide high-quality care during flight.


Optimization for Medevacs



Flexible Interior Configuration

  • Adaptable capacity:
    • 2 stretchers.
    • 14 seated passengers.
    • Option to add an extra stretcher by folding down seats.
  • Intervention scenarios:
    • Multiple evacuations: transport patients from different communities in a single trip.
    • Code Orange: rapid transfer of the most urgent cases to the south (depending on EVAC availability).

Improved Ergonomics

  • Unique layout for a more efficient working environment.
  • 2 stretchers equipped with an anchoring system for medical devices.


Facilitated and Secure Access

  • Access via cargo door with mechanical access ramp.
  • Smooth patient transfers from the ambulance stretcher, reducing the risk of injury or work-related accidents.


Autonomy and Comfort on the Ground

  • Equipped with an Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) providing:
    • Autonomous power generation.
    • Cabin heating while waiting on the ground for patient boarding.


This innovative configuration ensures safer, more comfortable, and more efficient medical transport for both patients and healthcare providers.
